100 – We F*ck*d Rushie’s Record Up

1987. George Graham’s young team faced the all powerful Liverpool in the League Cup Final, when the trophy still had merit. Ian Rush, Liverpool goalscorer supreme, had an amazing record of never having been on the losing side for them when he had scored a goal. When he put Liverpool one up no doubt the commentators repeated that stat ad nauseum…until Charlie Nicholas scored twice. One-nil down, two-one up, as in the semi, was the chant that day.

These scans are from a set of slides I was given a few years ago.

  1. I learnt a big lesson that day. If you want to enjoy a cup final don’t start drinking at 10am and get legless beforehand. I was stood on the terraces watching the game with one eye shut so that I could focus!

    Great day though.
